What to expect from NI Executive decision today on circuit breaker

The Northern Ireland Executive is expected to make its decision on whether to extend circuit breaker lockdown restrictions today.

Ministers have been recommended by health officials to extend some of the restrictions that have been put in place, but they are also facing pressures from industries who are worried if they will be able to survive any further closures.

Last week the First and Deputy First Minister said that a decision on any restriction extensions would involved the Assembly.

When the restrictions were put in place on Friday October 16, First Minister Arlene Foster said they would be lifted in four weeks time.

However at the beginning of November, the First Minister and Deputy First Minister issued slightly differing statements, with Ms Foster saying the restrictions would be lifted on November 13 as planned and Ms O'Neill saying they would be reviewed.

Last week health officials recommended that restrictions for close contact services and the beauty industry be lifted on Friday, while remaining in place for bars and restaurants for a further two weeks.

Although the Executive has been looking at a range of different options that it could take, with one of these being opening the hospitality sector but banning the sale of alcohol.

Restaurant owners have said they would like some clarity on the issue as they have been under severe financial pressure as a result of being forced to close, but have also said that allowing them to reopen at a reduced capacity without the sale of alcohol would not be viable.

Coppi owner and chef Tony O’Neill told Belfast Live on Monday evening "we are haemorrhaging money like every other restaurant in the city" and that "to take alcohol away from a reduced 50% [of customers] is non viable".

If that happens, he added "there is no point in opening".

Some health officials are calling for the hospitality sector to remain shut, with NI's British Medical Association chair Dr Tom Black saying the measures introduced over three weeks ago were "too little too late" and that reopening hospitality venues was "just not what we should be doing right now".

Following the series of meetings yesterday, it is expected that a decision will be involving the Assembly at some point today.
