Against the backdrop of stylish 1930s London; of smart townhouses, men in tailored three-piece suits and polished automobiles, Robert Jekyll might look the part but he’s a long way from the safety of Ceylon. Between MIO and Tenebrae, dark forces are at work.
In episode two of ITV’s ten-part series, following episode one, viewers are invited to delve deeper into the world that the original Dr Jekyll inhabited. Much of the action takes place in The Empire, an East End boozer that was a music hall in Victorian times. It would have been quite glamorous in the days when Edward Hyde was a frequent guest; now it serves as a striking emblem of faded grandeur and a fitting arena for our modern Hyde’s dramatic fight scenes. Glamorous landlady, and empress of the underworld, Bella rules the roost – and could definitely give him a run for his money.
