What to expect from Hillsborough drama 'Anne' - release date, cast and true story

Last year, ITV commissioned the production of a factual drama mini series which centres on the life and loss of Anne Williams, whose 15-year-old son Kevin attended the April 15, 1989 Liverpool v Nottingham FA Cup final and never returned home.

Kevin, along with 95 other football fans, tragically lost his life in the fatal human crush which was initially declared as an "accidental" event, leaving behind a grieving family who was forced to fight for justice to uncover the truth of the disaster.

A heartbroken Merseyside mum, Anne Williams, who is played by multi-award winning actress Maxine Peake, headed a campaign - at her own cost - which aimed to recruit a second medical opinion, important witnesses and pleaded for an inquest to expose the errors of the police who permitted excessive crowds into the stadium in an attempt to ease overcrowding outside that day.

Anne fought for over two decades alongside fellow mourning families to fight for the memory of their lost loved ones before sadly passing away in 2013.

Now, with the assistance of her daughter Sara, who heroically continued her campaign following her death, Anne's remarkable story has now been adapted into an ITV mini series which is set to air in the New Year.

As reported by Radio Times, Sara, who was only nine when her brother was killed, explained ahead of the premiere next week: "This is something I have thought very carefully about before deciding to go ahead.

"Mum’s story is such a powerful and inspiring one, and we all remember how important she always felt it was to get the message out there and bang the drum for justice.

“There have been a number of expressions of interest in dramatising her story over the last four years but the key factor here is the involvement of people who I know personally, and who also have a deep understanding of Hillsborough, our story and all the elements around that."

Peake, who is mostly widely recognised for her roles as Twinkle in the legendary sitcom Dinnerladies as well as Veronica Ball in Shameless, will also be starring alongside Stephen Walters, set to play her husband and Kevin's father, Steve Williams.

As well as Liverpool-born Walters, who previously appeared as Hillsborough victim Ian Glover in Jimmy McGovern's 1996 acclaimed television drama, Hillsborough, Peake will also be joined by Campbell Wallace, Lily Shepherd, Bobby Schofield and Clare Calbraith.

The mini series, which will be brought to screens by the creators of Line of Duty, will air for four consecutive evenings on ITV, commencing on 2nd January at 9:00pm.
