What to do this weekend: Veggie cooking class, veggie fest

Aug. 11--Your one-two guide of what to do the weekend of Aug. 14-16, 2015:

DO MORE!

It's certainly a green-filled weekend, starting with a hands-on cooking class featuring recipes from "A Girl and Her Greens" by chef April Bloomfield of The Spotted Pig in New York City. The class ($80), led by Madelaine Bullwinkel, a cooking instructor and resident chef at Alliance Francaise de Chicago, takes place at Lincoln Park bookstore Read It Eat. Bullwinkel will demonstrate a grilled vegetable vinaigrette, zucchini bread, kale polenta and whole roasted cauliflower with anchovies and tomatoes. Aug. 15, 10 a.m. -- 1 p.m. 2142 N. Halsted St., tickets at www.readitandeatstore.com.

SPEND LESS!

Next up, get your green on at the 10th annual Veggie Fest at Benedictine University in Lisle. The two-day festival (free admission) features a food court filled with vegetarian eats and drinks, from organic kale salads to fresh juices made of carrots, cucumbers, apples and more. Fill up on meals from vendors such as The Art of Dosa, Chinese Palace and Coney Island Treats (slinging a vegan parm slider with sweet potato fries), or spend your time hopping between free cooking demonstrations. Aug. 15-16, 11 a.m. -- 8 p.m.; 5700 College Road, Lisle, www.veggiefestchicago.com.
