What to do in the event of a nuclear attack

After the US killed Iranian general Qasem Soleimani during an airstrike, #WorldWar3 began trending on Twitter.

Iran also declared that it will no longer abide by their nuclear deal commitments.

While a nuclear war is by no means imminent, it does beg the question - what would you do in the event of a nuclear attack?

ready.gov has outlined exactly what you need to do in the twenty-four hours of a nuclear blast if you want to avoid deadly radiation poisoning.

The first 10 minutes

A nuclear bomb could get dropped with little to no warning, so knowing what to do is crucial.

The most important thing you can do is get inside the nearest building to avoid radiation poisoning or heat from the blast. Once you're inside, head to the basement or the middle of the building.

If you were caught outside, remove contaminated clothing and wash any unprotected skin.

If you are unable to get indoors, lie face down to protect your body from the blast until the shock wave passes; after this, you will have around 10 minutes to find adequate shelter.

The first twenty-four hours

Don't be tempted to go outside, unless your local authorities tell you to do so.

Tune into any radio or television available to see when it's safe to leave your home.

Battery operated or hand-crank radios will be useful at this time, as mobile phone service and wifi might be disrupted.

Only consume food that was indoors and covered at the time of the explosion.

If you have pets, keep them inside and make sure to wash their fur if they were outside during the blast.
