What to do in Lake Maggiore from the Borromean Islands to beautiful villages

Italy's spectacular Lake Maggiore is an intrepid explorer's dream.

You've probably already seen those azure blue lake waters and waterfront colourful fishing villages all over your social media feeds, not to mention the lake's waters are home to the breathtaking Borromean Islands.

Throw in the year-round mild climate, and it's difficult not to add Italy's second largest lake to the bucket list.

If you're after adventure, then Imagine Cruising's latest offering may be of interest, with a glorious Italian Lakes Retreat and luxurious Cunard cruise package that includes two nights at Lake Maggiore.

So, how do you make the most of a short break at the beautiful location? We've highlighted some of the best things to see and do in Lake Maggiore below...

The charming fishing villages: Expect buildings painted in colourful hues that look out directly to the lake waters, cafes and restaurants where you can tuck into that ridiculously tasty Italian cuisine, brilliant boutiques, and cobbled paths where you can find plenty more hidden gems and historic surprises.

The Borromean Islands: Lake Maggiore's waters are home to three beautiful islands which have long attracted tourists and locals, but if you only visit one, make it the magnificent Isola Bella. Here you'll find a palace furnished with Baroque decor, beautiful landscaped gardens with intricate fountains and eye-catching flora, and unrivalled views of the lake and its shoreline.

Historic castles : Perched on a hilltop directly overlooking the lake, Rocca di Angera is Lake Maggiore's most famous castle. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time as you wander through the impressive halls, and soak up the history courtesy of the exhibits. For a real once-in-a-lifetime experience, Imagine Cruising is offering an exclusive gala evening for its holidaymakers complete with a four-course dinner and live music, sure to make for an enchanting evening to remember.

The lake waters: Ideal for everything from watersports and boat trips to swimming, try and leave space on the itinerary to enjoy the lake waters, no matter how hard it may be to tear yourself away from the breathtaking shoreline. Don't fancy a dip? There are plenty of trails along the shoreline for a scenic stroll - and at sunset, it's well worth stopping at one of the waterside bars for a cocktail!

Want to go and check it all out for yourself?

Imagine Cruising offers a two-night stay in Lake Maggiore on its 12-night holiday, which includes four-star hotel accommodation, a tour of Isola Bella, and the exclusive dinner at Rocca di Angera.

But that's not all.

The sun-soaked itinerary also offers a two-night stay in equally spectacular Lake Como, and overnight break in Florence, and to top it all off, a luxurious six-night cruise on Cunard’s Queen Victoria with ports of call to Cartagena and Gibraltar.

Prices start from £2,399pp for the 12-night Cunard Mediterranean Voyage, Italian Lakes Retreat & Exclusive Gala Evening. Based on a June 7, 2022 departure. Find out more at imaginecruising.co.uk.
