What Timo Werner did for RB Leipzig amid talk of £60m Chelsea and Liverpool transfer battle

Chelsea and Liverpool are reportedly set to go head-to-head for the signing of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The Blues have been heavily linked with a move for the Germany international and the Daily Mirror claim that Jurgen Klopp is a long-time admirer of the 23-year-old and the Reds are interested in a £60m transfer.

And it's no surprise that Werner is attracting interest from the two clubs.

Bundesliga action returned this weekend following the winter break and Leipzig were in action in the late game on Saturday as they hosted Union Berlin.

Having gone into the break top of the table, Leipzig were handed a massive boost ahead of kick-off with second placed Borussia Monchengladbach losing 2-0 at Schalke on Friday night.

It meant Julian Nagelsmann's side had a chance to move five points clear.

But after 45 minutes at the Red Bull Arena, a shock was on the cards as the visitors took a surprise lead after 10 minutes thanks to Marius Bulter.

With that said, within 12 minutes of the restart normal service had been resumed.

Werner equalised, Marcel Sabitzer put Leipzig ahead before the pair combined for the former to make the game safe with seven minutes remaining as the hosts extended their lead at the top of the table.

Two goals from Werner takes him to 20 in the league this season - one ahead of Robert Lewandowski.

Although, the Bayern Munich striker has the chance to respond this afternoon (Sunday) as the reigning German champions look to move to within four points of Leipzig when they face Hertha Berlin away from home.

The good news for Chelsea and Liverpool - as well as any other Premier League club - is that Werner is open to the idea of playing in England at some point in his career.

"The Premier League is certainly the most interesting league, you have to say. There is a certain flair to watching the English league and playing there," he told Bild. "But many Germans have also been very successful in Spain, such as Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil."

However, asked if he could leave Leipzig this month Werner added: "As of now I have no desire to look for a move elsewhere."
