What time will Leo Varadkar make announcement on lockdown and can I watch it on TV?

The Taoiseach will announce a roadmap for Ireland's return to normal life in an address to the nation tonight.

Leo Varadkar is likely to tell the country that lockdown will be extended past May 5th and give an indication of when restrictions will begin to be eased.

The National Public Health Emergency Team is met this morning to decide the next steps in Ireland's battle with the killer virus.

Here's all you need to know about the announcement and how to watch it:

What time will Leo Varadkar address the nation?

The Taoiseach is expected to brief the nation live on television at 6:30pm.

The NPHET is meeting this morning and a Cabinet meeting to sign off on the plans will be held at 3pm, which is likely to take a couple of hours.

Leo Varadkar will then announce all the measures this evening before he heads to take part in The Late Late Show.

How can I watch it?

You can tune into the live broadcast on RTE One, RTE News Now and Virgin Media which will all go live when the Taoiseach steps up to the podium.

Or, you can also follow all the latest updates from what he says right here on our live blog.

What is expected?

The Taoiseach said he will then announce a "road map to reopen Ireland."

He also issued a stark warning that restrictions "may have to be reintroduced if it looks like the virus is going to surge back.”

Among the measures that may be eased is the "cocooning" advice for the over-70s.

Early stages of the Government's plan could see younger people asked to stay at home while the elderly are allowed out for a walk.
