What time Storm Barra will arrive in Leeds today with 50mph winds and heavy rain

A yellow warning is in place for ice and wind in Leeds today as Storm Barra is expected to batter UK with disruptive winds, heavy rain and snow.

While some parts of West Yorkshire are likely to see snow, Leeds should remain unscathed for today according to the Met office.

Rain is expected in the city between 12pm and 4pm today, with temperatures dipping to 3°C during the afternoon.

The national weather service said ice is likely to develop around Leeds, ‘leading to potentially hazardous conditions’.

Untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths are expected to be frozen by the arrival of arctic winds which could make ‘accidents and injuries more likely’.

Storm Barra is expected to hit Yorkshire at around 10am this morning with Brits bracing themselves for 70mph winds and heavy snowfall around North Yorkshire and the coastal areas.

Frank Saunders, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Strong winds arriving across the west through Tuesday morning, will spread inland and reach eastern areas through the afternoon and early evening.

“Gusts of 45-50 mph are expected widely, with 60-70 mph in exposed coastal locations. The strongest winds will ease across inland areas into the overnight period.”

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Brent Walker said: “A band of rain will turn to snow across northern England and Scotland through Tuesday.

“Two to five cm of snow is expected to accumulate quite widely across the warning area, but locally this could reach ten cm, particularly in parts of the Southern Uplands and Highlands.”

He added: “Strong south-easterly winds will also lead to snow drifting in places, particularly over the highest routes, adding to poor visibilities.”
