What time is today's tiers announcement? When Greater Manchester will find out post-lockdown restrictions

Greater Manchester and the rest of England will today find out which tier of restrictions areas will fall under when the national lockdown ends next week.

Health secretary Matt Hancock is due to set out the new tiers in the House of Commons this morning.

The tier system has been revised so that it is 'tougher' than the last one, with those in the two highest tiers facing stricter controls on hospitality.

Mr Hancock will be making a statement to MPs, in which he is expected to announce the tiers for each area in England, at around 11.30am.

That will be followed by a press conference led by prime minister Boris Johnson this afternoon.

The revised tier system was outlined by Mr Johnson on Monday, and will come into force when the national lockdown ends on Wednesday, December 2.

Areas placed under Tier 3 face a ban on household mixing, apart from in a limited number of public outdoor spaced, as well as the closure of all hospitality, except for takeaway and delivery orders.

Hospitality venues in Tier 2 will also be told to close, unless they serve substantial meals.

Downing Street says it will make tiering decisions based on five factors.

The five factors include case detection rates in all age groups, case detection rates in the over 60s and the rate at which cases are rising or falling.

The two other measures are the positivity rate – the number of positive cases detected as a percentage of tests taken – and pressure on the NHS, including current and projected occupancy.

Areas which make progress in slowing the spread of the virus could still be moved down a tier before Christmas, with the first review of the allocations due to take place by December 16.
