What time is the Queen's Speech on TV on Christmas Day? Big change revealed for this year's address

It has become just as much a Christmas tradition as a turkey dinner and next week, families across the country will gather together to watch the Queen's Speech, with a big change this year to keep up with modern technology.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's II annual address to the nation is always one of the most watched things on TV on Christmas Day and this year should be no different.

As well as people tuning into all the Christmas Day TV offerings, many people always tune into Her Majesty's speech.

Over the past few years, The Queen has used her Christmas message to praise the “powerful identities” of London and Manchester that have “shone through” in the face of terrorist attacks in the two cities.

And this year's speech will of course focus on the difficult year the country has faced due to the coronavirus pandemic.

What time is the Queen's Speech on TV?

As in years gone by, Her Majesty's speech will air at 3pm on BBC1 and ITV.

In a big change to this year, Amazon has announced the annual Christmas Day tradition, which began with a radio broadcast by George V in 1932, will allow users to ask voice-controlled Alexa to play the speech in full.

The big technological first means that at 3pm, when the speech goes out, people will be able to say "Alexa, play the Queen's Christmas Day message" or "Alexa, play Queen Elizabeth's Christmas Day message".

This year's speech is believed to have been recorded a few weeks ago so won't reference the tougher Tier 4 restrictions now in force in London and the South East.
