Vote of no confidence time: When will MPs vote on motion tonight after Theresa May's Brexit deal defeat

Theresa May is facing a vote of no confidence in her government today after last night's crushing Brexit defeat.

Her Withdrawal Agreement was defeated by 432 votes to 202.

Immediately after the vote, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn tabled a no-confidence motion in the Conservative government.

The vote will take place at 7pm on Wednesday following a debate in the Commons.

It would allow MPs to “give their verdict on the sheer incompetence of this government”, the Labour leader said in a speech following the result.

But Mr Corbyn's hopes of forcing an early general election were dampened after DUP Westminster leader Nigel Dodds said his party would back Mrs May.

Asked if Labour could win Wednesday's no confidence vote, shadow international trade secretary Barry Gardiner told the BBC: "I think the numbers are probably not there tomorrow. We will hope that we can."

Since 1900 there have been only three occasions when a government has lost a vote of confidence: twice in 1924 and once in 1979.

There have not been any confidence motions formally tabled in the House of Commons since 1993.

Bookies slashed the odds on an early departure for Mrs May following her humiliating defeat on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister is safe from a vote of no confidence from her own party for another 12 months, after the ballot against her failed late last year.
