What time is Taoiseach Micheal Martin's Ireland lockdown announcement as major changes expected?

Ireland is finally set to enjoy an easing of lockdown measures as Taoiseach Micheal Martin announces the latest batch of restrictions today.

A number of significant changes are expected over the coming months as government leaders share a roadmap for the summer.

Mr Martin has promised to give "clarity" when he makes his national address regarding the country's gradual reopening.

There were optimistic signs emerging on Wednesday night that the Government would be able to push on with plans to lift restrictions.

May 10 has emerged as a key date for the easing of restrictions with a number of extra measures set to be lifted including the return of inter-county travel.

NPHET shared its advice with the Covid-19 Cabinet sub-committee last night, and a full list of recommendations will be brought before a meeting of Cabinet this afternoon.

The decision will then be finalised before the Taoiseach makes his address to the nation this evening.

Here is everything we know about the announcement so far:

When is it?

Taoiseach Micheal Martin is expected to address the nation at around 6pm.

What is the Taoiseach expected to say?

May 10 has emerged as a key date for the easing of restrictions with a number of extra measures set to be lifted including the return of inter-county travel.

Among the measures expected to be announced include:

  • Phased reopening of non-essential retail starting with click and collect services
  • Full return for the construction sector
  • Return of personal services such as hairdressers, salons and barbers
  • Reopening of some outdoor activities
  • Reopening of some museums and art galleries

As part of the summer plan, it is likely Mr Martin will also give some clarity in regard to the hospitality sector and inter-county travel.

Reports have suggested people will be permitted to return to beer gardens as early as June 7, with the return of outdoor pubs and dining earmarked for that date. No fixed date for indoor dining has been provided but July has been mooted.

Separately, on June 2, hotels and B&Bs are expected to reopen.

It's expected that gyms will be allowed to re-open for single-person training on June 7.
