What time is Rishi Sunak's furlough announcement today?

The Chancellor is due to give an update on the furlough scheme this afternoon.

Rishi Sunak will update MPs on the Job Retention Scheme, which is currently supporting 6.3 million workers and and so far cost the Treasury £8billion.

It comes after Mr Sunak said last week the scheme, which pays up to 80% of companies staff salaries during the coronavrius pandemic, is 'to be wound down' and described it as not 'sustainable' in the longer term, as the MEN reports.

Speaking to ITV News, Mr Sunak said there would be no "cliff-edge" cut off to the furlough scheme, which was initially set up with a time frame until end of June.

He said that people would be eased back into work in a "measured way".

Mr Sunak is today going to address the Commons at 12.30pm.

Mr Johnson said in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon when asked about avoiding a cliff edge to the furlough scheme for employees: "I have no desire to steal his [Sunak's] thunder on that.

"But I can certainly tell (Mr Paisley) that it has been one of the most salient, most important features of this country’s response so far to this crisis that we have looked after the lowest paid, some of the lowest paid people in our society, the hardest working people and we will continue to do so."

He added: “I do think that the furloughing scheme has been one of the most remarkable features of the government’s response and it is unlike anything seen internationally.

“Six-and-a-half million people currently are being supported. It is absolutely right that we should do it.

“I don’t want to anticipate what (Mr Sunak) is going to say but the House will hear more about that tomorrow.”

Mr Sunak's announcement on the scheme will come after Boris Johnson unveiled his plan at easing the current lockdown restrictions - which includes encouraging a return to work.
