On September 8, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at her beloved home in Balmoral Castle.
King Charles III is returning to London, joined by Camilla, The Queen Consort, to begin preparations for the state funeral which the BBC noted was likely to be held on Monday, September 19.
Today, September 9, marks the beginning of the national period of mourning, which King Charles confirmed would last for 17 days.
A gun salute will be held later today, marking the beginning of commemorations for the much-loved and admired Queen.
It is available for people to watch at home, along with other seeing it take place in person.

What time is the Queen's gun salute?

The Queen's gun salute will be held at Friday, September 9 at 1pm.
In total, 96 rounds will be fired, each for every year of her life as it honours her 70 year reign as monarch.
The gun salutes will be taking place across the UK, all synchronized to take place at the same time - 1pm.
These are the following locations:
- Belfast, Hillsborough Castle - 105th Regiment Royal Artillery
- Cardiff, Cardiff Castle - 104th Regiment Royal Artillery
- Colchester - 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery
- Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle - 105th Regiment Royal Artillery
- Gibraltar - The Royal Gibraltar Regiment
- London, Hyde Park - The King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery
- London, HM Tower of London - The Honourable Artillery Company
- Larkhill (Stonehenge) - 14th Regiment Royal Artillery
- Her Majesty’s Naval Base Devonport
- Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth
- York - 4th Regiment Royal Artillery
Ships at sea will also take part in the gun salute.
These include:
- HMS Queen Elizabeth – UK
- HMS Richmond – UK
- HMS Northumberland – UK
- HMS Westminster – UK
- HMS Albion – UK HMS
- Lancaster – Portugal
There will also be a remembrance service at St Paul's taking place at 6pm.
Prime Minister Liz Truss will be in attendance, along with other ministers.
How to watch the Queen's gun salute
The Queen's gun salute will be broadcast live on news channels such as the BBC and ITV News.
There has been rolling coverage of the national period of mourning, with much of it also available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
In a statement, the gun salute in Hyde Park, London, said: "Royal salutes will be fired in London today at 1300hrs BST in Hyde Park by The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and at the Tower of London by the Honourable Artillery Company.
"One round will be fired for each year of The Queen's life."
