What time is Nicola Sturgeon's covid update? Where to watch and what to expect?

Nicola Sturgeon will give give an update to MSPs later today on the current coronavirus situation across the country.

The First Minister is expected to announce the latest covid figures in Scotland with cases of the virus rocketing over the Christmas and New Year period.

There are still fears that more Omicron cases could be identified in the coming days as children go back to school and some adults return to the workplace after the festive period.

During her last update to the parliament on December 29 Sturgeon asked people to stick to the guidance in a bid to halt the spread of the virus.

She is expected to repeat those calls in order to prevent huge pressures on the NHS over the winter months.

Where can I watch the statement?

The update will be streamed on the Daily Record's main Facebook page which can be viewed here.

If you are out and about or sat at your desk then the Daily Record Politics team will be running a live blog on the statement from Holyrood.

The Scottish Parliament website will have a stream of the speech as will its Facebook.

If you'd prefer to watch it on the TV then the BBC Scotland channel will have a special programme of the statement which airs at 1.55pm.

What time is Nicola Sturgeon speaking?

The First Minister is expected to get to her feet in the virtual Scottish Parliament at around 2pm on Wednesday, January 5.

During her 20-minute statement Sturgeon will announce the latest covid figures then take questions from opposition leaders Douglas Ross (Tories) and Anas Sarwar (Scottish Labour).

MSPs from all sides will get to ask questions for around 55 minutes.

What can I expect?

Sturgeon will announce the latest coronavirus figures in Scotland. The latest stats revealed that 17,259 new Covid-19 cases were identified in the last 24 hours.

There were 1,147 people in hospital on Monday with recently confirmed Covid -19, up 116 in 24 hours, and 42 were in intensive care, up four.

A total of 4,384,343 people have received their first dose of a covid vaccination, 4,022,821 have received a second dose, and 3,006,133 have received a third dose or booster.

The government has faced calls to reduce the self-isolation period from 10 days to seven.

Sturgeon is likely to address the issue later today with the expectation that Scotland will fall into line with the rest of the UK on isolation rules.
