What time is Nicola Sturgeon's Covid lockdown speech today - and what might she say

Scots can expect new rules on the use of face coverings as part of Nicola Sturgeon's three week review of coronavirus guidance due today.

The First Minister will update MSPs in the Scottish Parliament this afternoon as a review is due on the current restrictions which ban indoor visits across the whole country.

Sturgeon said yesterday at the daily coronavirus briefing that she would be be "very unlikely" to recommend an easing of the rules currently in place due to the increasing number of cases.

She has also said she will discuss "options" for what happens after the short-term set of additional restrictions on the hospitality trade ends later in October.

The government is drawing up a new multi-tier system of "alert levels" similar to that recently implemented in England.

1.429 new infections were reported Wednesday, the highest number since the health crisis began.

On face coverings, the First Minister said she would issue new guidance on when Scots should wear them.

It has been suggested new rules will be put in place on the use of face masks in workplaces and when employees should be wearing them.

And Edinburgh University health expert Professor Linda Bauld told BBC Radio Scotland this morning that there may be some benefit in asking people to wear masks when they are queuing outside shops.

After Wales announced a ban on people travelling to the country from areas like the Lothians where there is a recognised high prevalence of cases, there has been speculation that Nicola Sturgeon may introduce a similar rule.

Scots were already advised against travel to Blackpool after Sturgeon said a significant number of the new cases found in Scotland reported recent travel to the area.

The First Minister also asked people from Blackpool in particular not the travel to Scotland.

But there has been questions about how a more formal ban could be enforced, and how Police Scotland would manage to ensure people travelling to and from Scotland were doing so for reasons allowed within any new rules.

When is Nicola Sturgeon speaking, and how to watch?

The First Minister will not show her daily live coronavirus briefing today at the usual time on TV.

Instead, Nicola Sturgeon will set out her three-week review live from parliament this afternoon at 12.20pm.

You can watch live coverage of her briefing on Parliament TV here.
