What time is Nicola Sturgeon's announcement today and how to watch

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will provide a further coronavirus update for Scots this afternoon after introducing tough new lockdown rules.

Ms Sturgeon will chair a Scottish Government daily briefing this afternoon, providing the latest Covid stats before moving on to update Scots on any new announcements.

She will be joined by the government's national clinical director, Professor Jason Leith.

The update will take place at 12.15pm.

It comes after the First Minister told the Scottish Parliament yesterday that enhanced restrictions were required to halt the surging infections across the country.

Largely blamed on the new variant of the virus, recent weeks have seen growing numbers of Scots testing positive for the virus.

Ms Sturgeon took to Twitter to urge people to stick with the rules: "Being back in lockdown is really hard to take for everyone, but it is necessary to slow down this new strain of the virus while we get people vaccinated.

"Please - for you own safety, that of your loved ones and of the whole country: Stay at Home, Protect the NHS and Save Lives."

Speaking to the BBC's Good Morning Scotland radio programme on Tuesday, the First Minister said it may be possible to lift the latest restrictions if the vaccination programme manages to push ahead of the virus in the "race" over the coming months.

She said: " Lockdown is about trying to slow down the virus and push rates of it back down.

"Now, if we manage to do that, then hopefully we will be able to start lifting some of these restrictions while the vaccination programme is ongoing, even in that first phase of it.

"But I can't be certain about that yet, because it's dependent on us managing to get the levels of infection down."

You can watch her update on BBC Scotland or on the Scottish Government's social media channels.
