What time is Nicola Sturgeon announcement today as Scotland faces level 4 lockdown on Boxing Day

Nicola Sturgeon is to make her final lockdown announcement before Christmas today.

The First Minister will give an update at parliament outlining Scotland's Tier 4 restrictions, which come into force on Boxing Day for three weeks.

The toughest level of lockdown will be in place north of the border for at least three weeks in a bid to curb the spread of a new variant of coronavirus.

What time?

The First Minister is expected to deliver her statement on coronavirus restrictions at Holyrood at around 2:05pm (updated from 2.20pm).

What can we expect?

Nicola Sturgeon is expected to confirm Scotland will enter Tier 4 lockdown from Boxing Day.

The highest level of restrictions will be in place for at least three weeks to curb the spread of a mutant variant of coronavirus, which is estimated to be 70% more transmissible than the original strain and is thought to be fuelling cases in England and Wales.

Scots have been urged not to meet members of others households indoors on Christmas Day, despite the tightened restrictions announced on Saturday allowing three households to a maximum of eight people aged 12 and over to do so for that day only, instead of the five days previously outlined.

A travel ban has also been enforced, with the exception of Christmas Day.

The First Minister has said Scotland must act "preventatively" to keep the new strain of the coronavirus "under control".

It emerged at Saturday's emergency press conference that 17 cases of the new variant have been reported north of the border, but Ms Sturgeon emphasised that this was likely an underestimate.
