What time is Matt Hancock making the tier announcement today?

The whole of England is bracing for another another announcement on the coronavirus tier announcement today.

Each individual county area will find out if their current Covid-19 restrictions will be eased or tightened when Health Secretary Matt Hancock addresses the commons.

It comes just days after millions were plunged into the strict lockdown-like Tier 4 measures on Boxing Day due to rocketing case rates around the country.

MPs have headed to Westminster today to vote on Boris Johnson's Brexit deal, with the tier announcement expected to follow shortly after.

The announcement from Matt Hancock about tier changes are expected at around 3pm today (Wednesday, December 30).

Pressure has been mounting from scientists and experts warning that tougher measures are needed to control the spread of the virus.

Dr Susan Hopkins the senior medical adviser for Public Health England, said the "unprecedented levels" of Covid-19 infection across the UK was of "extreme concern".

While Professor Andrew Hayward, of the Government's New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), said widespread Tier 4 restrictions, or even higher, are likely to be needed as the country moves towards "near-lockdown".

And with coronavirus infection rates increasing in all regions, along with the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals, any changes are likely to involve areas moving up a tier rather than down.

Boris Johnson has committed to reviewing the tier system on a fortnightly basis, and the government will move areas depending on how they're coping with the virus.

However the Government will move to place areas in different tiers depending on case rates before the official review dates.

Areas including Oxfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk were plunged into Tier Four on Boxing Day, ahead of today's review, as part of the government's efforts to control the spread of the new, more easily spread strain of Covid-19.

There is already speculation as to which areas will be moved to the toughest level of restrictions in today's announcement.

Some parts of the East Midlands, such as Northamptonshire and Leicestershire, could be moved up from Tier 3 to Tier 4, according to news agency PA.

The toughest tier of restrictions includes the closure of non-essential shops closed and stricter rules on social mixing.

All the areas within the West Midlands metropolitan county – Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton – might be facing a move from Tier 3 to 4 too.

Hartlepool in north-east England, along with a handful of areas in Lancashire – Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Pendle and Ribble Valley – could also be upgraded from Tier 3 to 4.

Cumbria could also be moved from Tier 2 to Tier 3, as could Worcestershire and North Yorkshire.
