What time is Boris Johnson's press conference from Downing Street today?

Boris Johnson will hold a press conference on the government's response to the coronavirus pandemic this afternoon.

The Prime Minister will be joined by England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and the government's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.

It comes after chancellor Rishi Sunak held a press conference from Downing Street six days ago to outline his new financial support measures for businesses and workers.

The Prime Minister last held a press conference three weeks ago today after an absence of nearly six weeks.

The daily briefings were scrapped at the end of June and have been held only sporadically since.

According to a Downing Street spokesperson yesterday the aim of today's briefing is "to provide an update on the latest statistics" and "not because there is some specific set of new announcements to make".

Mr Johnson will be appearing in the House of Commons for Prime Minister's Questions at noon and the press conference is expected later this afternoon at 5pm.

New regulations in Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside, Sunderland and County Durham came into force at midnight.

It means that people in those areas can now be fined if residents mix with others from outside their household or bubble in indoor settings, including pubs and restaurants.

On Tuesday, the UK recorded the highest number of daily coronavirus cases since the outbreak began.

A further 7,143 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK were announced yesterday along with 71 further deaths.
