What time is Boris Johnson's coronavirus press conference today and what will he say?

Boris Johnson will hold a press conference on the government's response to the coronavirus pandemic from Downing Street this afternoon.

It will be the first press briefing the prime minister has led for two weeks following a period of national mourning for the Duke of Edinburgh, who died on April 9.

Mr Johnson will be speaking from the new Number 9 briefing room at 5pm today.

It comes after Matt Hancock announced in the House of Commons on Monday that India would be added to the UK's 'red list' of countries from 9am on Friday.

Anyone who is not a UK or Irish resident or a British citizen will be banned from arriving in the UK from India, and those that do return will need to quarantine in a government-approved hotel for 10 days.

Mr Johnson was forced to cancel a trip to the south Asian country scheduled for this month.

More than 100 cases of a new variant first identified in India have now been confirmed in the UK, but experts say it is not yet known whether the new variant is behind a surge in cases in India.

Mr Johnson will likely use today's press conference to update the public on measures being used to contain cases of the new variant from India.

Public Health England (PHE) experts are currently unsure whether any of the variant's 13 mutations mean the variant can be transmitted more easily, is more deadly or can evade the effectiveness of vaccines or natural immunity.

Earlier today, education secretary Gavin Williamson defended the delay in putting India on the travel “red list” to protect against coronavirus.

He told Sky News: “It’s standard practise to give people a sort of short window in order to be able to manage their affairs. It’s the right approach to do, it’s the approach we’ve taken with other countries around the world when they’ve gone onto the red list.

“The Government continuously reviews the data, continues to review the information we’re getting from the scientific community in terms of what countries should be put onto the red list, and sadly India has been one of those countries that has had to be added.”

Meanwhile, the government also announced on Monday that more than 10 million people in the UK have now received both doses of a coronavirus vaccine.

The latest data on cases, hospitalisations and deaths is still looking positive, although it is too early to say whether the latest easing of lockdown restrictions has had an effect on the numbers.

Weekly registered deaths involving coronavirus in England and Wales have remained at the lowest level for more than six months, according to the most recent figures.
