What time is Boris Johnson coronavirus press conference from Downing Street today?

Boris Johnson will lead another coronavirus press conference today as lockdown measures come into force.

The Prime Minister will appear from No 10 to address the public on the first day of England entering a month-long coronavirus lockdown, Downing Street has confirmed.

This will be the fourth time since the major announcement on Saturday evening (October 31) that Mr Johnson has spoken about the return of the strictest measures.

He held a televised press conference on Saturday alongside the government's chief scientific advisor, Sir Patrick Valance, and the chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty to announce the planned lockdown.

Mr Johnson then appeared before MPs in the House of Commons on Monday to outline the plans before appearing again on Wednesday for PMQs and to speak in Parliament again ahead of the lockdown vote.

The Prime Minister will lead today's press conference at 5pm and he'll be joined by NHS chief executive Sir Simon Stevens.

The addition of the NHS chief comes on the same day NHS England moves to highest level of emergency alert.

It was announced on Wednesday that the health service is set to return to level 4 alert status at 00.01 on Thursday in line with the beginning of the second national lockdown.

Sir Simon said the move was in response to a "serious situation ahead" due to a rise in coronavirus patients needing intensive care.

The number of inpatients seriously ill with Covid-19 has rocketed from 2,000 at the end of September to almost 11,000.

This figure is over half of the 19,000 that were hospitalised at the April peak, according to NHS England medical director Prof Stephen Powis.
