What time are the BAFTAs on TV and how is Newcastle in the spotlight?

All eyes will be on the movie world this Sunday evening as the 73rd British Academy Film Awards take place in London.

The red carpet will be rolled out for the arrival of stars dressed in their finest as the annual ceremony gets under way at the Royal Albert Hall.

The glitzy event is the forerunner to the Academy Awards in LA and is widely seen as an indicator as which movies will go on to win a coveted Oscar.

While the EE British Academy Film Awards has this year come in for criticism over a claimed lack of diversity among the nominations, there still will be plenty to celebrate.

The film with the most nominations is Joker while the other awards categories include two hopefuls which have links to the North East.

The first is Ken Loach's Sorry We Missed You which was shot entirely in and around Newcastle and the other is Sam Mendes' 1917 which made .

Here's a guide to this year's BAFTAs night, including the full list of nominations and how and when film fans can watch it screened on TV.

BAFTAs 2020

Who's the host and when is it on TV?

Graham Norton will be at the helm of the awards ceremony which takes place on Sunday, February 2 at the Royal Albert Hall and the event will be broadcast on BBC 1 from 9pm until 11pm.

What is Sorry We Missed You nominated for?

Ken Loach's latest film was shot in Newcastle, following on from I, Daniel Blake which was the first feature made in the North East by the director and went on to win the BAFTA for best British film.

Sorry We Missed You, which features a cast of mostly first-time actors, is this year nominated in the same category.

It has already followed hot on the heels of its predecessor by winning awards and critical acclaim but it lost out at Cannes Film Festival on the prestigious Palme d'Or which I, Daniel Blake won in 2016. So, it's fingers crossed that it will match that BAFTA success this year.

The hard-hitting drama is nominated in the Outstanding British Film category alongside 1917; Bait; For Sama and Rocketman.

 What about 1917?

Sam Mendes' movie is nominated  in the Best Film category alongside the likes of Joker and goes up against Joker again for Best Director plus Original Score; Cinematography; Production Design, Make-up and Hair, and Sound, as well as each of those big-hitters having other separate category nominations.

Filming of Mendes' Second World War-inspired epic included scenes at North East locations such as Low Force waterfall on the Raby Estate, near Barnard Castle, at Upper Teesdale and at Stockton.

What are the rest of the nominations?
