BRITISH driver George Russell will start Sunday's (October 5) Formula 1 (F1) Singapore Grand Prix from pole position after posting the fastest time in qualifying.
Russell (Mercedes) finished 0.182 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen (Red Bull) in Saturday's (October 4) qualifying session at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore.
Championship leader Oscar Piastri qualified third fastest, with his nearest rival, McLaren team mate Lando Norris, finishing back in fifth.
Speaking after qualifying, Russell said: "It is amazing to be on pole.

"Yesterday was a challenging day but it is good to come back. It will be a long, sweaty race tomorrow.
"Singapore has not been the kindest to me on the past and that has been through my own doing so I will not get carried away with pole."

Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz finished qualifying in 12th and 13th, respectively.
However, the Williams pair have since been disqualified from Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix due to "technical breaches" on their cars, the F1 website reported.

Piastri currently leads the driver's championship with 324 points, ahead of Norris on 299.
Verstappen has closed the gap on the McLaren pair in recent weeks with back-to-back wins in Italy and Azerbaijan.
