What tier 3 means for Newcastle United fans and a St James' Park return

Newcastle United fans must continue to watch on from home after the city was plunged into Tier 3 status.

Despite the Government briefly raising hopes of fans returning to watch Premier League action, the elevation in status means that no supporters will be allowed through the turnstiles to watch their side.

The Tier 3 placing will get reviewed in the middle of next month, however, with stricter rules now in place with lockdown set to end on December 2, it means that the home game with West Bromwich Albion will take place behind closed doors.

Had Newcastle been placed in Tier 2, there would have been some hope for fans with up to 2,000 supporters allowed into top-flight stadia.

When asked about return of fans, United manager Steve Bruce said: "Why only 2,000 or 4,000 when we have the capacities to house 20,000?

"It's a step in the right direction, it's a small gesture.

"For the small clubs it is a relief, they live of it."
