What Thomas Tuchel said to Hansi Flick about Chelsea star Kai Havertz's position

Kai Havertz is looking more and more like a quality player as the games go on for Chelsea.

The 22-year-old, who was signed by the Blues for a then-club record fee of £72million from Bayer Leverkusen, took some time to settle in at Stamford Bridge, but is now looking more established in the Premier League.

Havertz netted the decisive goal in the Champions League final back in May to write himself in Chelsea folklore and has started this season off in fine style as well.

The Germany international has scored once and assisted the same amount in his opening four matches for the Blues in all competitions.

The attacker has played in numerous positions for the west London club since making the big-money switch last summer, but has arguably looked his best in one of the two roles behind the striker in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Now, Germany boss Hansi Flick has opened up on conversations he has had with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel about how to get the best out of Havertz.

“I do believe that Kai can play in the centre,” Flick said in an interview with German news outlet SportBILD.

“I exchanged ideas with Thomas Tuchel. I can well imagine that he can also play in the centre.”

Speaking back in March about Havertz, Tuchel explained what he thinks his best position will be going forward.

"In my opinion, his best position is between the nine and the 10 and have the freedom to drop and move fluid between the two positions," the Chelsea manager said.

“I like to have him in high positions, I don’t want to have him behind the ball and he feels comfortable in between the lines and in narrow pockets.”

Havertz, meanwhile, admitted he was unsure about where his best position is back iwhen being used as a false nine under Tuchel.

"I play somewhere up front – number nine, number 10, something in between – to be honest, I don't know 100%," he told Chelsea's official match day programme in May.

"I just enjoy the position right now because I feel very good there. I have a lot of fast strikers next to me right now, so that is very nice and I think it is the perfect position for me.

"I can be dangerous in the box, I can have the ball a lot and that is what I like, so right now it is very nice for me in this position.

"I think the first year wasn't very easy for me but I think I'm getting better and better, getting more confidence.

"But, for me, the team effort was the most important thing this season, and that we get victories – that's more important than my own personal things.

"But, of course, I always want to play my best and I'm getting better now, so it feels good."
