What Thibaut Courtois said to Olivier Giroud in the tunnel about Timo Werner in Chelsea draw

Thibaut Courtois thinks his save to deny Timo Werner in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday wasn't too difficult at all.

Chelsea took a valuable draw from the Spanish capital, drawing 1-1 against Real Madrid after goals from Christian Pulisic and Karim Benzema.

The away goal could make all the difference for the Blues as they look to make their first Champions League final since winning the competition in 2012.

But it could have been two had Timo Werner took his gilt-edged chance before the clock struck 10 minutes, a close-range effort after Pulisic deftly headed a ball across goal.

Werner had just the goalkeeper to beat, but as Chelsea know all too well, Courtois is a good shot-stopper, and the Belgian reacted brilliantly to stick out a leg and keep the scores locked at 0-0, at least for another four minutes before Pulisic rounded him to put the Blues in front.

While the save was an excellent one, the feeling was that Werner should have scored, and it seems Courtois also takes that stance, playing down his save.

In the tunnel ahead of the second half, the cameras caught Olivier Giroud saying to Courtois: “The save on Timo! pfff.”

And Courtois simply replied: “All I did was put my foot out like this," putting his leg out to illustrate."

Courtois was excellent during his seven years at Chelsea before making his move to Real Madrid for just over £30million in 2018.

He could now stand between his old club and a Champions League final as he looks to win the competition for the first time in his career having not featured in the Blues' 2012 campaign and having lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid in 2014 during his time on loan at Atletico Madrid.
