Chelsea are in talks with representatives of Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva as they look to bolster their defensive options this summer.
That is according to a report by The Athletic.
The Blues are keen to strengthen their defensive rearguard this summer after conceding 54 goals in the Premier League during the 2019/20 campaign.
Chelsea, who discovered that they will face Brighton & Hove Albion on the opening day of the Premier League season yesterday, have been linked with moves for a plethora of centre-backs in recent weeks, including a big-money swoop for Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly.
However, Chelsea now seem keen on luring Silva, who is out-of-contract with the French giants this summer, to Stamford Bridge on a free-transfer.
This news has arisen shortly after Silva, ahead of Sunday evening's Uefa Champions League final tussle with Bayern Munich in Portugal, revealed that Sunday's clash with Bayern may not necessarily be his final game for the club, hinting that he could still put pen to paper on a new deal with the French champions.
"Destiny is in our hands,’ Silva, as quoted by the Metro, said ahead of Sunday's Uefa Champions League final.
"The club turns 50 and it’s the last year of my deal. I gave everything I could.
"If I can continue to play with the club, we will discuss it and make the best decision."
Should Chelsea win the race for Silva this summer, he would certainly add a sense of steel and experience to head coach Frank Lampard's back-line, with the 35-year-old having enjoyed an outstanding playing career to date, both at club level and for Brazil.
