What the Trafford Centre and Manchester Arndale are doing to combat coronavirus

The Prime Minister has reassured the public that 'business must go on as usual' as he unveiled the government's 'battle plan' to tackle coronavirus.

However, both intu Trafford Centre and Manchester Arndale are stepping up their precautionary measures to limit the potential spread of the virus.

Public concern has been raised amid the global prevalence and growing number of cases in the UK - which now totals 53, including four patients in Greater Manchester.

A man from Bury tested positive on Sunday, with a further two confirmed in Bury on Tuesday, and one in Bolton.

The Department of Health is continuing to share advice on washing your hands more often than usual with hot soapy water, or to use hand sanitiser - which has been selling out fast on the High Street. 

As a result of concern over coronavirus, which has been described as a 'likely epidemic' in the UK by chief medical officer, professor Chris Whitty, these are the responses from Manchester's biggest shopping centres.

Manchester Arndale

A spokesperson for The Arndale, says that since the outbreak, it has been sterilising touch points as well as increasing the frequency of deep cleans in busy areas.

David Allinson, Centre Director at Manchester Arndale, said: "We continue to follow the official guidance from Public Health England carefully and are monitoring the situation closely.

"Naturally, the health and well-being of all our visitors and staff is our absolute priority. We have precautionary measures in place to help combat any potential spread of COVID-19.

"We are sterilising touch points on a regular basis across the site, including lift buttons, door handles and hand towel dispensers and have increased the frequency of deep cleans in high footfall areas like food courts and public toilets.

"As the situation continues to evolve, we will update these measures based on the latest advice provided by the government and Public Health England, and will make the necessary adjustments to our cleaning regime."

intu Trafford Centre

The Trafford Centre is increasing the frequency of their deep cleans (MEN MEDIA)

intu Trafford Centre, based in Trafford, is the third largest shopping centre in the UK, which sees 30 million visitors a year.

Similarly to the Arndale, they have increased the frequency of deep cleans and have installed hand sanitiser gels and wipes across the centre.

Alison Niven, Centre Director at intu Trafford Centre, said: "We continue to follow the official guidance from Public Health England carefully and are monitoring the situation closely. Naturally, the health and well-being of all our visitors and staff is our absolute priority.

"We have precautionary measures in place to help combat any potential spread of COVID-19. We have installed hand sanitiser, gels and wipes across our centre and have increased the frequency of deep cleans in high footfall areas like the food court and public toilets."
