What the signings of Coutinho, Dybala and Lo Celso would mean for Spurs' Champions League squad

Tottenham will soon discover who they will face in the Champions League group stage with the draw taking place in Monaco at the end of the month.

Having lost in the final against Liverpool in Madrid back in May, Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping for a nice draw as they bid to go one better this time around.

The Champions League draw on Thursday, August 29 means that the manager will then have to name his squad in September for the competition and that is something that has proved rather problematic in recent seasons.

Teams are only allowed to register 17 non-locally trained players in their 25-man squad and this has seen some players unfortunately miss the cut over the past couple of years.

Erik Lamela, Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou are some of those to have missed out on the squad, with Mauricio Pochettino believed to be devastated to leave Juan Foyth out at the start of 2018 following Lucas Moura's move to north London from Paris Saint-Germain.

What has also not helped the club is the rules regarding which players are classed as locally trained.

Eric Dier and Ben Davies, who both play for home nations, are down as 'foreign' players due to the fact they spent their academy years in Portugal and Wales respectively.

The summer arrival of Tanguy Ndombele means that Spurs have 17 non-locally trained players in their squad as things stand ahead of this season's Champions League.

However, Pochettino has been given a big boost ahead of submitting his squad in September as Foyth can now be entered on the club's B list due to the fact he joined Spurs in August 2017 and was born on January 12, 1998.

A player may be registered on the B List if he is born on or after 1 January 1997 and has been eligible to play for the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday by the time he is registered with UEFA.

That now means that Spurs have one free foreign player spot on the main A list for a new signing before Thursday's deadline.

Pochettino may still have a big decision to make when the squads are submitted in September, however, as Paulo Dybala, Giovani Lo Celso and Philippe Coutinho have all been linked with a move to the club before the transfer window slams shut.

If all three do indeed join the club and Spurs' squad remains exactly as it is come the start of September, then two foreign players would miss out on the cut.

Nkoudou would be one of those given he has barely featured under Pochettino in his three years in the capital, while Victor Wanyama could potentially be at risk given his injury troubles over the past few years and the fact Spurs are well stocked in midfield at present.

As well as players coming in through the door over the next 24 hours or so, we could also see players departing before it's time for the manager to name his European squad and that would certainly make things easier for him.

Italian clubs have until Friday, August 23 to complete any remaining business, with teams in France, Germany and Spain having until Monday, September 2 to sign players.

We could well see Nkoudou move on between now and the start of next month as he looks to get his career back on track elsewhere, with Christian Eriksen believed to want to move to Spain if he does depart Spurs before the transfer window close across Europe.

There's no guarantee Coutinho, Dybala and Lo Celso will all join Spurs ahead of the new Premier League season, but Pochettino will be hoping that is the case as he looks to build a team capable of competing for major honours on a regular basis.
