What the Rangers pundits said as Ally McCoist roars 'we'll take the Sheriff' before penalty tease

Rangers continued their momentum under new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst with a fine performance in their Europa League group stage finale with Lyon.

The game was a dead-rubber with Rangers having already secured their place in the knockout round play-offs by finishing second in Group A.

They wanted to ensure Lyon couldn't finish the group with an unbeaten record and looked like doing that with Scott Wright's first half effort.

But a Calvin Bassey own goal made sure the French hosts took something from their final group game.

Joe Aribo nearly had the chance to nick the game for Rangers as he entered the Lyon box, but his side will travel back to Glasgow in a good mood regardless.

Van Bronckhorst made six changes as some fringe men were given a chance to impress.

Wright made good on his rare start with a goal while Patterson shone in place of captain James Tavernier.

Bassey meanwhile continued his resurgence at centre-back as Rangers look to the next round, where Barcelona are one of several big-hitters dropping down from the Champions League they could face.

But a match with Moldovans Sheriff Tiraspol could provide a manageable route.

Here's what the Rangers pundits said about the match.

Ally McCoist

"We'll take them, we'll take the Sheriff. I mean, Barcelona would be unbelievable.

"You get into this stage of any tournament and you get some top teams. There's some great ties ahead for Rangers.

"I like Scott Wright and he has to bring more goals to his game. His goal return has to be better.

"So I am delighted for him that he got his goal. It was a quiet second half, but I thought Rangers might have nicked a goal.

"I thought when Aribo went through on goal late on, if he lets the goalkeeper hit him, it's a penalty."

Derek McInnes

"I think Aribo lit the game up when he came on. He did very well. Rangers never gave up too many chances.

"Overall they will be happy with the game. Van Bronckhorst has managed to include some of his squad players.

"Hopefully he's come away without any injuries from the match.

"And now he has a fresh squad for the weekend. It doesn't do them any harm to get a point in Lyon."

Richard Foster

"Scott Wright scored a goal and I really like him and he has the pace to frighten defenders.

"His movement is also good. When you score in Europe you can feel you've made a good case to start more in the manager's plans.

"I thought it was a good overall performance. Rangers started slowly and perhaps showed Lyon too much respect.

"They had a great spell before the goal and then got the goal. There was more purpose to Lyon in the second half.

"Rangers weren't cut open and over the piece, it was impressive from Rangers.

Charlie Adam

(SNS Group)

"Lyon had parts of the game where they looked good and had their opportunities.

"They didn't carve Rangers open at any time. Rangers will be delighted.

"They made a couple of changes and got some minutes for some players. They've came away in Europe and got a good point against a good French team.

"Rangers will be happy with what they've got and they now look forward to the draw."
