What the pundits are predicting for Crystal Palace's clash with Newcastle at St James' Park

It could be a tight affair as Newcastle United host Crystal Palace in the Premier League this afternoon (Saturday).

That's according to several pundits, who are predicting a close contest at St James' Park in the Premier League clash.

The two sides are separated by just one point and one place in the table, with Palace currently in 13th position ahead of their trip to the north east.

And Mark Lawrenson, Michael Owen and Paul Merson are all predicting a tight game when the two sides meet this afternoon.

But all three are predicting a Newcastle win, with Lawrenson and Merson both predicting a 2-1 scoreline, while former Newcastle striker Owen is predicting a 1-0 victory for his old side.

"I would expect the Magpies to be a bit more adventurous on Saturday, and I can see them edging this one," said Lawrenson in his weekly predictions feature for the BBC website.

The record in sight for Crystal Palace ace Luka Milivojevic ahead of Newcastle United test

"But both of these teams are safe anyway. It would be a massive shock if either of them went down."

Owen also believes that the Magpies will get back to winning ways, after losing out 2-0 in their last game against Arsenal on Monday night.

In his weekly predictions feature for BetVictor, he said: "Newcastle are not totally safe from the drop, but one more success should be sufficient.

"With seven Premier League wins at St James' Park, United are strong although ironically Palace have tasted more success on their travels than at home.

"The Eagles were unable to prevent Spurs from crowning the opening of their new ground with a victory on Wednesday evening, where they also failed to score.

"The clubs played out a goalless draw earlier in the season and I expect another low scoring and tight affair."

Newcastle United have three injury concerns ahead of Crystal Palace clash

Meanwhile, Merson also thinks it will be a win for Newcastle, with the Sky Sports pundit predicting the same scoreline as Lawrenson.

"I think Newcastle win with home advantage, but both these teams should be safe because Cardiff won't get enough points," he said.
