What the pundits are predicting for Chelsea's Champions League clash with Ajax

Chelsea return to European action tonight (Wednesday) as they travel to face last season's semi-finalists Ajax.

The Dutch outfit sit top of Group H with two wins from as many games in this year's competition.

Despite losing the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong in the summer to Juventus and Barcelona, respectively, Ajax are yet to lose in all competitions this season.

For the Blues, a 2-1 win over Lille in their last Champions League outing boosted their prospects of reaching the latter stages.

Frank Lampard's side sit third in Group H, level on points with Valencia and could even move top of the standings with a win in the Netherlands.

Frank Lampard's brilliant response to Ajax claim

After a morale-boosting 1-0 at the weekend, Chelsea will head to Ajax knowing that whilst they must respect their toughest game in the competition to date, they mustn't fear anything.

So, how will the Blues fare at the John Cruyff Arena? Here's a round-up of what the pundits are saying.

Charlie Nicholas - Sky Sports

"These are always the same. Three players left Ajax, but they have real talent and are going well in the Eredivisie. Everybody is raving about Chelsea's youngsters too - at the weekend I thought they would struggle against Newcastle.

"People are quite rightly complimenting Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi. At this age, they will go through a quiet spell, but does Frank Lampard keep them in during this or take them out for the Champions League?

Ajax will look to have a lot of possession whereas Chelsea normally get that. They are a good counter-attack team but Ajax will cause them problems.

Prediction: 2-2

Michael Owen - BetVictor

"Ajax are unbeaten in all competitions so far this season (W13 D4) and their last defeat came on that famous night back in May when Spurs made a dramatic late comeback in the semi-final second leg to qualify for the final in Madrid.

"The hosts have won both group games 3-0 so far this season but I feel Frank Lampard’s exciting and improving side can get a hard-earned point in the Johan Cruyff Arena. The Blues have not lost in their last nine away games in European competition and I expect them to pick up a valuable point midweek."

Michael’s recommendation:  Game to finish in a draw
