Peter Wilby kicks off his stint as The Guardian's new press commentator with a piece about the way in which the "vague, generalised grumpiness" in newspapers helps to create a climate of fear, suggesting that we live in a country under siege. "You would never believe," he writes, "that the level of terrorist incidents is lower than it has been since the 60s or that burglaries have fallen by 59% in a decade." Stephen Glover in The Independent is worried about the implications of the privacy case won by Canadian folk singer Loreena McKennitt, pointing out that judges are developing - by virtue of article eight of the human rights act - a privacy law.
