What the pandemic means for the Mark Wahlberg movie Infinite that turned Cardiff street into US action scene

Remember when a hugely busy road in the centre of Cardiff was blocked off to make a Hollywood film?

That was a year ago - October 28, 2019 to be exact - and it was for the Mark Wahlberg-starring, Antoine Fuqua-directed action movie, Infinite.

A 'major action sequence' took place on the capital's Newport Road, closing it off for a weekend, as it was turned into a New York Police precinct with cop cars and gun shots.

Cardiff Bus couldn't even use the artery road and had to be diverted.

The film is based on the novel The Reincarnationist Papers by D. Eric Maikranz and was due to be released on August 7 this year - but due to the Covid pandemic, like many blockbusters, it's been pushed back to 2021.

Now it will be released on May 28, 2021 .

Wahlberg, who was not reportedly in Cardiff for the filming on Newport Road, plays a self-medicated, near suicidal man haunted by having skills he never learned and visions of places he has never visited.

He is rescued by a group called “infinites,” who unlock his past life memories, in the hope he can thwart a member of the group with a terrible plan for humanity.

For the best part of four days, Cardiff Council revealed that they were paid £1,450 for a temporary road closure license. They were also paid £250 plus VAT for a film permit.

Infinite is directed by Training Day and Soutrhpaw director, Fuqua and also stars Teen Wolf and Maze Runner's Dylan O'Brien, Rupert Friend from Homeland and Chiwetel Ejiofor from 12 Years a Slave and Dr Strange.
