What the Met Office says about the chances of the UK being hit by snow

The chances of a white Christmas is now long gone (yes, we have mentioned the C word on January 17) but what are the chances of snow falling in the coming weeks?

There has been plenty of speculation about whether there is going to be a change in the forecast and a suggestion that a 'polar freeze' is on its way at the end of the month

But we wouldn't advise digging out that sledge just yet as the Met Office has had its say on the impending weather.

Meteorologist Bonnie Diamond has spoken out to say that the reports are based on a weather forecast for two weeks ahead.

Therefore, she told the Daily Star that this is in fact too far away for an accurate prediction and there's no sign of snow in the Met Office's forecasting system.

She added that while there is always chance of snow in winter, it is likely to only affect high ground in northern parts of the country.

And that is said to be "pretty normal" for January.

The latest forecast suggests that cold weather is expected to sweep the country creating freezing fog.

This has lead to Public Health England issuing a cold weather alert - urging people to "prepare for cold weather conditions and look out for those most at risk".

In Greater Manchester tomorrow (Saturday January 18) will be largely fine and dry with plenty of sunshine.

Overnight, clear skies will continue with the expectation of a widespread frost.

Beyond the weekend, more frosty starts can be expected but things are set to be milder by Tuesday.
