What the Met Office says about reports of a 'polar vortex' and plunging temperatures in Wales this week

“Polar vortex”, “plunging temperatures” and the “big freeze” are all terms filling the weather headlines today.

But what does the Met Office have to say?

One news website said Britain is preparing for a -5C freeze, while another warned of severe conditions.

This is what the UK’s weather service is forecasting for the week ahead.

Temperatures are due to drop below freezing in parts of Wales, but frost is not unusual at this time of year.

Are there any severe weather warnings in place?

No, the Met Office has not issued any weather warnings for the next seven days.

Is it particularly cold for the time of year?

The average maximum temperature for Wales in November is 9.6C and the average minimum is 3.9C.

On average, just under five days in November are frosty and there are 162mm of rainfall.

What is the polar vortex?

The polar vortex is a circulation of winds high up in the stratosphere, up to 30 miles above the earth.

It is present in winter and is not a new phenomenon, scientists have known about it for many years.

The winds regularly exceed 155 miles per hour – the strength of the winds in the strongest hurricanes.

During the winter it can strengthen and weaken. These changes have an influence lower down in the atmosphere and ultimately on our weather.

Are there any flood warning in place?

Natural Resources Wales has not issued any flood warnings or flood alerts. Four warnings have been removed in the last 24 hours.
