What the Met Office has to say about 'snowbomb' at the end of the month

It has been reported that a 'snowbomb' will hit the UK at the end of January, but the Met Office has said that any unsettled weather around this time will be "predominantly" in the north and northwest of the UK.

Temperatures will plunge below zero overnight this week in Wales, but high pressure over the UK will mean that it will stay mainly dry across the region.

And that pattern looks set to be dominant until the end of January and beyond. See the forecast for Wales this week here.

Some meteorologists are predicting snow on Friday, January 28, but the Met Office long range UK forecast for Friday, January 21 to Sunday, January 30 says: "Through Friday and into the weekend it is expected to be dry for many but often rather cloudy, with some light rain at times in the far north. For the rest of the period high pressure is likely to dominate, particularly in the south of the country, resulting in drier and more settled weather with the possibility of overnight frost and fog which may linger through the day.

"Any unsettled weather is likely to be in the north and northwest with rain at times but otherwise predominantly dry. It will also be windy in the north at times. Temperatures are expected to be around or slightly above average, although colder where fog persists by day."

There is a Met Office weather warning for freezing fog in parts of Wales from Monday into Tuesday (January 18), and the forecast right up to the middle of February is showing the ongoing likelihood of overnight frosts and fog.

The long range forecast for Monday, January 31, to St Valentines Day says: "High pressure is expected to remain dominant across the UK. This means that generally settled conditions will prevail with bright or sunny spells for many.

"There is the ongoing likelihood of overnight frost and fog, which may linger in places. Into February, outbreaks of rain and stronger winds are likely at times across the north, whereas settled conditions are likely to persist in the south.

"Temperatures are expected to be slightly above average, particularly in the north, however some colder interludes remain possible, bringing a risk of occasional snow, this most likely over northern hills."

The Met Office forecast for Wales this week

Monday night:

Dry overnight with clear spells. Mist and fog developing fairly widely. Temperatures falling close to or slightly below freezing for many, leading to some freezing fog patches. Minimum temperature -3 °C.

Tuesday:

A cold and frosty start Tuesday with fog slow to clear as sunny spells develop. Temperatures close the average for mid-January, but locally cold where fog persists. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

A band of cloud and rain sinking south Wednesday with clearer skies following. Generally cloudy with sunny or clear spells both Thursday and Friday with overnight frost for some.
