What the Manchester United players told James Garner ahead of debut goal

The younger members of Manchester United's squad had been encouraging James Garner to have more shots from outside of the area before he scored against Perth Glory.

The midfielder came on as a second half substitute for Luke Shaw in the 2-0 win against Perth Glory on Saturday and scored with just his second touch of the ball as he hit a sweet strike from 20 yards out.

Garner's goal was his first for the senior team and United's second of the game and Angel Gomes, who played 45 minutes in the win, told MUTV after the game that they had been encouraging Garner to have a go from outside the area and discussed how they would celebrate before kick off.

"We've got on to him about scoring more from outside the box," Gomes said. "We were speaking about it before the game, what we'd do if we score, he didn't celebrate, I told him he had to celebrate. He's happy and all the lads are buzzing for him."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also joked that he had told the 18-year-old he had to score with his first touch as he was waiting for him to replace Shaw, who came off as a precaution with a tight hamstring.

"I told him to get on the edge of the box and score with his first touch, I think it was two so I wasn't happy with that," the United manager joked.

"Fantastic strike, the boy can play and I think he enjoyed tonight."

Garner will be hoping for a more of a run out in United's next game against Leeds United on Wednesday.
