What the M62, M1 and Leeds looked like on the first morning of Lockdown 3

As the country marks the third national lockdown major roads near Leeds was left deserted during rush hour.

Typically, the M1 and the M62 will be jam-packed as drivers make their way to work and dropping children to school.

But on Monday evening, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered people to work from home with exemptions of those who cannot do so and schools, and universities have moved to online learning.

People have been asked only to leave the house for limited reasons such as to shop for necessities, to exercise or to provide care or help to a vulnerable person.

The strict rules put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus has left the county’s road virtually empty and some with just a few cars.

The Prime Minister said the new measures will last until at least mid-February.

Speaking to the nation, he said: "With most of the country already under extreme measures, it is clear that we need to do more, together, to bring this new variant under control while our vaccines are rolled out.

“In England, we must therefore go into a national lockdown which is tough enough to contain this variant.

“That means the Government is once again instructing you to stay at home.

“You may only leave home for limited reasons permitted in law, such as to shop for essentials, to work if you absolutely cannot work from home, to exercise, to seek medical assistance such as getting a Covid test, or to escape domestic abuse."
