What the Premier League suspension means for West Ham players Ryan Fredericks and Jack Wilshere

The Premier League has been suspended until at least April 30, which gives West Ham's injured players even more chance to recover but as it stands, that's only two of them.

With Andriy Yarmolenko returning to action for the Hammers under-23s prior to the first suspension of games late last week, that left just Ryan Fredericks and Jack Wilshere as the players on the sidelines.

Fredericks suffered a shoulder ligament injury in the defeat to Manchester City on February 19 after getting barged to the floor by City midfielder Rodri.

The right back underwent successful surgery on his left shoulder a week later and was expected to be sidelined for around six weeks.

That would have meant he would return some time in early April to action but now that the league has been suspended until at least May, he could well be fully fit - if not match fit - by the time the campaign resumes.

That will leave David Moyes with a decision whether to bring the defender back into the fold after his injury or persist with teenager Jeremy Ngakia, who has performed excellently in the absence of Fredericks.

The Hammers also have Pablo Zabaleta, who is in the last year of his contract in east London, as a back up so the manager has plenty of options in that position.

The other injury to Wilshere is a bit more complex as there is no timescale on his return.

The Hammers midfielder was beset by injury problems even before he arrived in east London 21 months ago as a free agent from Arsenal having been released.

Wilshere started only eight games last season and this season, it's just two in the league as he has struggled with injury again. In total he has made just 18 appearances so far in claret and blue since signing.

Wilshere underwent surgery on a hernia problem at the back end of January and it was expected to keep him out for the majority of the rest of the season.

Wilshere has been back in training, sporadically, and that was with the under-23s at Rush Green and he is still some way off a return. Despite the season now being extended, it's not yet known if he will be fit enough to make a comeback before 2020/21 gets underway.

Even if he were to be fit, whether he would be a part of the team is very much in question.

The club has always remained quiet on when the England international could return to action and that hasn't changed in the wake of the latest news on the coronavirus pandemic.
