What the Government has said about banning the public sale of fireworks

With only days until 2020 is upon us, many pet owners will start to get anxious as fireworks begin to fill our skies.

Back in November, a petition began to flood social media to call on the Government to ban the use and sale of fireworks.

More than 300,000 people signed the petition before it was closed due to a General Election.

Despite the petition, social media was ablaze with groups calling on fireworks to be banned from public sale.

But the Government has since responded and it appears that nothing is going to change anytime soon.

According to the response on November 5, a spokesperson from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said it understands that fireworks can "cause distress to individuals or animals" but that "the majority of people who use fireworks do so appropriately and have a sensible and responsible attitude towards them".

But it did point out that it will be building evidence to create "a full picture of data around fireworks in order for government to identify whether there is a problem, and if so, what action - if any - is appropriate"

A spokesperson from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy told LeicestershireLive: “We want the public to enjoy fireworks, but this should be done in a safe and considerate way.

“This is why we have robust laws in place controlling the sale, purchase and use of fireworks, to continue to promote their responsible use.”
