What the future holds for Victor Wanyama at Spurs as £13.5m Club Brugge transfer falls through

The 2019 summer transfer window is now shut for Premier League as well as European clubs.

Deadline day in England was just under a month ago, while the European window slammed shut on Monday which means Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham squad is set for the first half of the season.

Attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen has stayed put despite links to Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. While defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld weren't sold even though they've entered the final 12 months of their contracts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Another player whose future at the club is unclear is Victor Wanyama.

The Kenya international enjoyed a good first season with the north London outfit following his arrival from Southampton in 2016, but since then he has struggled with injuries and subsequently lost his place in the team.

With Spurs smashing their transfer record with the signing of Tanguy Ndombele, Wanyama looked certain to leave.

In fact, as reported by football.london last month a deal which eventually would have been worth £13.5m - a £9m fee up front with £4.5m in add-ons - had been agreed with Club Brugge.

It was then down to Wanyama to agree terms with the Jupiler Pro League side, something which didn't materialise and now the question is what does the future hold for the defensive midfielder?

Well, our Spurs writer Alasdair Gold gave his thoughts on the topic during an Q&A session with fans on Wednesday where he said the 28-year-old is likely to get very few opportunities under Mauricio Pochettino.

"He's way down the pecking order now after those problems with both knees and 18-year-old Oliver Skipp is getting picked ahead of him.

"Spurs and Club Brugge were close to a deal for him but for one reason or another Wanyama did not make the move and they signed another defensive midfielder.

"Reports in Belgium seemed to indicate that all that was left was the Kenyan agreeing wages which presumably did not happen.

"He's now going to get very little game time in the coming months unless there are some real injury problems and he'll have to take whatever he can get."

Even with Ndombele ruled out against Arsenal last Sunday, Wanyama didn't even make the matchday squad as Moussa Sissoko was preferred in a central midfield role alongside Harry Winks and Eriksen at the Emirates Stadium.
