How Chelsea's successful transfer ban appeal will affect Olivier Giroud and Pedro

Chelsea's transfer ban appeal has been successful and this will have a huge impact heading into 2020.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has announced that the Blues will be able to add to their squad in January, having been banned from doing so in the summer transfer window.

The worst case scenario would have been that Chelsea weren't able to reduce the ban which means no new arrivals at Stamford Bridge until next summer.

In truth, that might not have been such a bad thing given how well the team are playing under Frank Lampard, not to mention the progress of academy stars such as Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori.

But with the Blues being successful with their appeal, links to the likes of Jadon Sancho and Ben Chilwell will be ramped up.

This scenario could also mean a couple of departures in January.

In particular Oliver Giroud and Pedro. Could the West London outfit be in a position to let the forwards leave when the window reopens?

Well, our Chelsea correspondent Oliver Harbord discussed the prospect of this happening during a Q&A session with fans last month where he hinted at it being the case - but on one condition.

"Transfer ban dependent.

"It does seem that Olivier Giroud and Pedro’s futures at Chelsea are coming to an end with Lampard taking the club in a different direction and looking towards the youth players.

"Both players have contracts that run out in the summer, and both have been rarely used. Giroud has been on the bench several times, but not used, while Pedro is failing to make the matchday squads.

"However, whether they stick around in January or not depends on the transfer ban. If it is not lifted then Lampard will hope to keep the pair, as he won’t want to leave his squad short."

Giroud has previously hinted at being prepared to leave Chelsea in January in order to boost his chances of making Didier Deschamps' Euro 2020 squad.

"I'm going to fight for my place in Chelsea. The coach knows it. And we will make the decision in January," Giroud said, as per Goal. "If I want to leave Chelsea? Not necessarily. But if I need to make a choice.

"I have some beautiful years in front of me. I'm 33, I still have legs and a good healthy lifestyle and I feel good physically.

"I want to have fun and want to play more games. Chelsea is my priority, but if in the end I'm forced to make a choice, I will do it as when I left Arsenal.

"[Lampard] will almost certainly watch the matches. In any case, I am going back to Chelsea pumped up."
