What Texans general manager Brian Gaine looks for in a cornerback

On Friday, The Texans Wire had the chance to speak with Deepi Sidhu of the HoustonTexans.com who provided a great insight into the Texans behind closed doors.

What was particularly interesting to hear from Sidhu was some insight into what general manager Brian Gaine, who has a huge role in scouting for the Texans, looks for in a defensive back.

“The draft has a lot of guys that I think would fit this system,” said Sidhu. “A lot of guys that general manager Brian Gaine likes, long, strong cornerbacks, he likes a lot of length in his defensive backs, and this draft is really full of them.”

Keeping this in mind, they may well be looking at someone like Greedy Williams or Amani Oruwariye who both stand at 6-2, or the likes of Rock Ya-Sin, Deandre Baker, or Trayvon Mullen who are all ever so slightly shorter but still possess very good length both in terms of height and arms.

While the likes of Williams and Baker may not be available by the Texans show up with the 23rd overall pick, there are still plenty of other top-level corners who seem to own some of the traits that Gaine seemingly finds most important.

Houston will need to address the position in the offseason. Starting corner Johnathan Joseph will be 35 years old when Week 1 hits for the 2019 season. The club does have have a credible option with Aaron Colvin, who signed with the team last offseason. However, with the departure of Kevin Johnson along with the uncertainty of whether Kareem Jackson will return to Houston, the organization has to find cornerback help.
