What Tahith Chong did in the Manchester United dressing room after Astana defeat

Tahith Chong took responsibility for Manchester United's Europa League defeat to Astana in the dressing room after the game.

United led 1-0 through Jesse Lingard's first goal since January but Chong somehow failed to make it 2-0 with the goal gaping when he scooped the ball over the crossbar.

Astana equalised within a minute through Dmitriy Shomko and debutant Dishon Bernard put through his own net seven minutes later to secure their recovery.

Chong was substituted in the wake of Astana's second goal and addressed his profligacy once United players and staff had returned to the dressing room.

"He said the same in the dressing room," Solskjaer said. "He stands up and it's a different game if he scores and takes the responsibility, but no forward or striker should ever worry about missing chances, that's about growing up, I think I did as well."

Lingard was the oldest outfield player in the travelling squad and captained United for the first time four days after he replaced Phil Jones at the interval in the 3-3 draw with Sheffield United.

Lingard turns 27 next month and his seniority was noted by Solskjaer, who named 14 teenagers in the travelling squad for Astana. "I thought he was excellent today, Jesse led by example, loads of energy, drive, a very good goal.

"He's been very good in the whole trip with the young boys, he is 27, he is an old, experienced boy and very pleased with his performance on the pitch.

"So good to get Jesse back."

Lingard could start in the Premier League for the first time since September against Aston Villa on Sunday.
