What Swansea City say about Graham Potter speculation as Brighton make him first choice to replace Chris Hughton

Swansea City are yet to receive an official approach from Brighton for manager Graham Potter, WalesOnline understands.

Chris Hughton and the south coast club parted company on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after the Seagulls' final-day clash with Man City.

In a club statement, Brighton confirmed that the search for a new manager is already under way.

Potter is understood to be Brighton's main target to replace Hughton - the man who took Brighton into the top flight in 2017 - while current England Women's boss Phil Neville is also thought to be on their shortlist.

The 43-year-old is also the overwhelming favourite with bookmakers to be named as Brighton's next boss.

Given their Premier League status and Swansea's current situation following last year's relegation, it is understood the Amex Stadium outfit could offer Potter a much improved financial package.

And while the Swans would be reluctant to see the former Ostersund manager depart after just 12 months at the Liberty Stadium, they are more than aware that Potter has his own personal ambitions.

Due to the restructuring process in place at the club, Swansea accept that an approach from Brighton or elsewhere in the Premier League could prove difficult to turn down.

In similar fashion to Brendan Rodgers' departure to Liverpool in 2012, the Swans would understandably be loathe to see their manager depart, although they accept it could prove too good an opportunity for Potter to turn down if a tempting enough deal was put on the table.

'It would be a disaster' - Swansea City fans plead with Graham Potter to stay amid Brighton links

However, Potter has repeatedly committed himself to the cause in South Wales, and he has stated his desire to re-build the Swans in similar fashion to how he operated in Sweden where he gained three promotions with Ostersund, despite regularly having to sell key players.

Potter signed a three-year deal with the Swans last summer, meaning his current contract at the Liberty does not expire until 2021.

The Englishman guided Swansea to 10th place in the Championship as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in his debut campaign at the club.

Despite keeping Brighton in the Premier League, the Seagulls made the bold call to axe Hughton after his side ended the campaign with just three wins from their last 23 outings.

In addition to Hughton, assistant Paul Trollope and first-team coach Paul Nevin also left the Seagulls on Monday.
