What Steven Gerrard told his Aston Villa players at half-time against Manchester United

Steve Gerrard delivered 'a few home truths' in the Aston Villa dressing room at half-time against Manchester United.

Bruno Fernandes gave United an early lead on Saturday evening and Ralf Rangnick's side were in control, exuding quality.

But as the first half began to end, Villa grew into the game and called the previously untested David de Gea into action.

The hosts looked the better team again in the second half, however, Fernandes found the back of the net to double the lead. Villa responded well from that moment on and eventually found two goals in the latter stages to ensure the points were shared.

Gerrard admitted to expressing his disappointment in Villa's first-half display in the dressing room after the game.

"We were very positive in all the preparation work we did," Gerrard told BBC Sport.

"We should have taken confidence from Monday [FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford] but we didn't start the game in the right place and were second best for 25 minutes. The first goal was coming because we didn't look right in that time.

"We improved slightly but certainly deserved to be trailing at the break.

"I had to tell a few home truths [at half-time] and the reaction was fantastic."
