What Steven Gerrard said when asked about the future of Sunderland target Greg Docherty today

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard believes Greg Docherty's future is best served away from Ibrox as he revealed there is a 'real serious club' in talks to sign him.

Sunderland have been linked with a move for the Gers midfielder this month with reports in Scotland claiming the Black Cats had made an approach to sign Docherty on loan for the rest of the season.

Charlton and Peterborough have also been linked with 23-year-old as well and Gerrard confirmed in a press conference this morning that he has advised Docherty to look for a move elsewhere this month.

"I think Greg had a real strong loan at Shrewsbury," he said.

"This is a player we respect really much due to his effort but unfortunately it hasn't happened this season and the best thing for his career is to go and play.

"There is a real serious club in for Docherty. Negotiations are ongoing. That is getting closer and closer and I predict something could happen in the next couple of days.

"Hopefully he gets out in the next couple of days so he can start to play some football. Sometimes these negotiations take longer than you would like but in an ideal scenario I would like to see him start playing regular football in the coming days rather than in the coming weeks."

As Gerrard mentioned, Docherty enjoyed a successful season on loan at fellow League One side Shrewsbury last term and was voted the club's Player of the Year.

The former Hamilton Academicals star returned to Rangers last summer hoping for more first team action but has failed to make a first team appearance since August.

Sunderland have already signed a former Rangers player in Kyle Lafferty this month and manager Phil Parkinson is also known to be looking for another forward, a midfielder, and possibly a central defender as he seeks to reinforce his squad ready for a tilt at promotion.
